WHAT'S NEW IN ACROBAT READER 2.1
===================================
• Acrobat Reader 2.1 is Power Macintosh native.
• Acrobat Reader 2.1 now accepts some specially enabled plug-ins, such as the Weblink plug-in. This allows Acrobat Reader users to take advantage World Wide Web (URL) links in PDF files created with Acrobat Exchange.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
=====================
• Macintosh computer with 68020 (Macintosh II series) or greater processor. Acrobat does not support Kanji.
• MacOS 7.0 or later
• 2 MB application RAM
• 4 MB hard disk space
• FDHD floppy disk drive or CD-ROM player if installing from physical media
Note: If QuickDraw GX is enabled, to print from Acrobat Reader 2.1 you must turn on desktop printing.
INSTALLING ACROBAT READER
===========================
• To install Acrobat Reader 2.1 on your hard disk drive, double click on the file called "AcroRead.mac" and follow the instructions on your screen.
Note: If you downloaded Acrobat Reader from the internet or an online service, you may need to expand the file from an archive format such as .sit.
• If no version of system-level Adobe Type Manager is present on your system at the time of installation, ATM™ 3.8.3 is installed in the Adobe Acrobat Fonts folder for use by Acrobat only. This private copy of ATM is recognized and used only by Acrobat Reader 2.1 and uses memory only when Acrobat Reader is running.
• If ATM 3.8.2 or earlier is present in the System, the installer updates system ATM to version 3.8.3. The ATM Font Database (required by Acrobat 2.1) is always installed loose the System folder.
• If QuickDraw GX is enabled at the time of installation, ATM™ 3.8.3 is installed at the System level. It is not possible to use the private version of ATM in conjunction with QuickDraw GX.
• Depending on whether QuickDraw GX is enabled at the time of installation, different versions of the Adobe Acrobat substitution fonts Adobe Sans MM and Adobe Serif MM are installed. See the Troubleshooting section below for notes on configuring Acrobat Reader 2.1 with QuickDraw GX.
• If TrueType versions of Times, Helvetica, Courier, Symbol, or Zapf Dingbats are installed on your system, they are not replaced nor moved. If you are using Type 1 versions of these fonts, updated versions of the Type 1 fonts Times, Helvetica, Courier, Symbol and Zapf Dingbats will be installed in the appropriate location for your version of System 7.
• Adobe recommends that Acrobat Reader 2.1 be installed on the user's startup (boot) drive. Acrobat Reader 2.1 installs files and resources required for font substitution in the active System Folder at the time of installation.
• Please note that Acrobat Reader 2.1 does not support Kanji or 68000-based Macintoshes.
• ATM 3.8.3 allocates approximately 1000K of RAM from MultiFinder memory when it is initialized by Acrobat Reader. If Virtual memory is on, ATM cannot use MultiFinder memory, so an additional 1000K memory has been allocated in the "Preferred" setting for Acrobat Reader. For more information, see the Memory Requirements section below.
MEMORY REQUIREMENTS
=====================
Memory requirements settings for Acrobat Reader 2.1 can be set by selecting the Acrobat Reader icon in the Finder and choosing Get Info from the File menu.
• The default minimum memory requirement for Acrobat Reader 2.1 is 2048K. Do not change the minimum memory setting.
• The preferred memory size is 3100K and may be adjusted based on the considerations described below.
• If you are using ATM 3.8.3 in the Adobe Acrobat Fonts folder, it allocates approximately 1000K of RAM from the Acrobat Reader 2.1 partition if there is sufficient space. If there is not sufficient space, or if Virtual Memory is on, ATM attempts to allocate the required RAM from System (MultiFinder) memory (except on Power Macintosh configurations, which always allocate the required RAM from the Acrobat Reader partition).
• If you are using system-level ATM on a 68XXX-based (non-PowerMac) system, you can reduce the Preferred size value for Acrobat Reader 2.1 by 1000K.
USING THE WEBLINK TOOL WITH ACROBAT READER
============================================
To use the Weblink plug-in to follow URL links, you must set up your web browser to recognize Acrobat Reader. See the Adobe Home Page (http://www.adobe.com) for information on configuring your browser to recognize PDF documents.
To install the Weblink plug-in:
• Copy the Weblink plug-in to the Adobe Acrobat Plug-ins folder. If you just installed Acrobat Reader 2.1, the Weblink plug-in may already exist in the Plug-ins folder.
• Restart the Acrobat Reader.
To select your web browser:
• Choose Edit>Preferences>Weblink
• Click Select, then select your web browser application file from the Open File dialog box.
• Choose a connection type. Standard is the connection type for the currently supported browsers -- Netscape 1.1 and Spyglass 2.0.
ISSUES WITH THE OLE PLUG-IN
===========================
If the OLE plug-in for Acrobat Reader 2.1 is installed for communication with other applications such as Lotus Notes, consider the following:
• Opening an embedded or linked PDF file requiring an Open password is not supported in this release.
• If you are not using OLE, removing OLE plug-in from the Adobe Acrobat Plug-ins folder will decrease launch time and memory use.
• If double-clicking an embedded or linked PDF file does not launch Acrobat Reader 2.1, Acrobat Reader probably has not been added to the registration database. Make sure that the OLE plug-in is in the Acrobat Plug-ins folder and that OLE is installed in teh System Folder and run Acrobat Reader 2.1. Reader will now be properly added to the registration database.
• With some applications such as Lotus Notes, the system may beep and appear to hang when attempting to open a PDF document. In most cases, Acrobat Reader has signalled and error, and the other application has failed to bring Reader to the front. Bring Acrobat the front and quit the other application to to regain system function. Errors that might cause this behavior include too many files open, open password required for the document, low memory, etc.
• OLE will display error messages when attempting to embed or insert files with Acrobat Reader. Acrobat Reader 2.1 does not support embedding or inserting PDF files into another document. The Reader only supports opening embedded or linked files.
TROUBLESHOOTING
=================
If you experience problems with installation, consider the following:
• If you downloaded the Reader from an online service or internet site, check that the file transferred properly. Adobe's World Wide Web site at http://www.adobe.com will list the correct size of the binhexed version of the Macintosh 2.1 Reader. Corrupted archives have been reported to issue a message "requires 68020 or greater processor to run" on Macintosh IIx systems.
• Acrobat Reader 2.1 installs substitution fonts appropriate to your system configuration at the time of installation. Later, if you either enable or disable QuickDraw GX, you will need to reinstall Acrobat Reader 2.1 to ensure that the correct version of the fonts required by Acrobat Reader 2.1 are installed in their proper locations.
• If you installed System 7.5 and QuickDraw GX *after* installing Acrobat Reader 2.1, you must reinstall Acrobat Reader 2.1. The QuickDraw GX installer replaces ATM 3.8.3 with ATM GX (ATM 3.7), which is not compatible with Acrobat Reader 2.1. [The QuickDraw GX 1.1 installer includes ATM 3.8.3, so this is not an issue.]
• If QuickDraw GX is enabled, Acrobat Reader 2.1 requires desktop printing be turned on to print. Do not use the QuickDraw GX Helper to turn off desktop printing.
• See the QuickDraw GX Read Me for more details on QuickDraw GX operation and compatibility.
• Font Not Found - A font not found error may indicate that ATM did not have enough memory to create a substitute font. Increase the size of the ATM Font Cache from the ATM Control Panel.
• For best printing results, we recommend you use PSPrinter 8.2.1 (or later) driver from Adobe. PSPrinter 8.2.1 is not included with Acrobat Reader. For information on purchasing printer drivers, contact Adobe at one of the telephone numbers listed in the Technical Support section below.
• If you are using a Macintosh PowerBook or other Macintosh where System 7.5x was installed with the “For All Macs” option, you will likely have the Assistant Toolbox extension in your System Folder. If your system has this extension, you may be unable to print files from the Acrobat Reader or Exchange if you are also using private ATM. To solve this printing problem, disable background printing.
• If you are using the private copy of ATM in the Adobe Acrobat Fonts folder (i.e. you do not have ATM installed in your System's Control Panels folder) background printing is disabled in the PSPrinter driver.
• If you are printing to a PostScript Level 2 device using the Adobe PSPrinter 8.X or Apple LaserWriter 8 printer drivers, you need to update the Printer Info after selecting the printer from the Chooser in order for the printer driver to recognize the printer supports PostScript Level 2. If this is not done, Acrobat Reader will not send PostScript Level 2 information to the printer. During setup, make sure to select the specific PostScript Printer Description (PPD) file for your particular printer, do not selecet the "Generic" PPD if at all possible.
• Weblink - launching a second instance of Acrobat Reader or Exchange with Weblink installed will cause the the second viewer to terminate.
• Weblink - Spyglass Mosaic displays a temporary filename for a PDF document rather than the document title.
• Weblink - cannot display files from ftp locations from Spyglass Mosaic. Download the PDf file and open it manually from Acrobat.
• Weblink - Spyglass Mosaic does not automatically come to the front when the user clicks on a link with a URL target. Use the web browser button in the toolbar to bring the web browser to the front.

Please note that certain clauses differ for end users in different countries. Clauses 1 to 5 pertain to end users in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Eire. Clauses 6, 7 and 8 pertain only to end users in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland; clauses 9, 10 and 11 pertain only to end users in Eire.
NOTICE TO USER:
THIS IS A CONTRACT BETWEEN YOU AND ADOBE SYSTEMS INCORPORATED (“ADOBE”), A CALIFORNIA, U.S.A. CORPORATION. BY INSTALLING THE “SOFTWARE” (AS DEFINED BELOW), YOU ACCEPT ALL THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THIS AGREEMENT. This Adobe Systems Incorporated ("Adobe") End User License Agreement accompanies an Adobe™ software product and related explanatory materials ("Software"). The term "Software" shall also include any upgrades, modified versions or updates of the Software licensed to you by Adobe. This copy of the Software is licensed to you as the end user. Please read this Agreement carefully. If you cannot understand this license or do not think this license applies to you then please contact the Adobe Customer Support Department.
Adobe grants to you a non-exclusive license to use the Software, provided that you agree to the following:
1. Use of the Software.
• You may install the Software in a single location on a hard disk or other storage device; install and use the Software on a file server for use on a network for the purpose of permanent installation onto hard disks or other storage devices or use of the Software over such network; and make backup copies of the Software.
• You may make unlimited copies of the Software and give copies to other persons or entities as long as the copies contain this Agreement and the same copyright and other proprietary notices that appear on or in the Software.
2. Copyright.
The Software is the intellectual property of Adobe and its suppliers and is protected by United States copyright law, international treaty provisions, and applicable laws of the country in which it is being used. The structure, organization and code of the Software are the valuable trade secrets and confidential information of Adobe and its suppliers. You agree not to modify, adapt or translate the Software. Trademarks shall be used in accordance with accepted trademark practice, including identification of trademark owner’s name. Trademarks can only be used to identify printed output produced by the Software. Such use of any trademark does not give you any rights of ownership in that trademark. Except as stated above, this Agreement does not grant you any intellectual property rights in the Software.
3. Transfer.
You may not rent, lease or sublicense the Software. You may, however, transfer all your rights to use the Software to another person provided that you transfer this Agreement with the Software.
4. General Provisions. If any part of this Agreement is found void and unenforceable, it will not affect the validity of the balance of the Agreement, which shall remain valid and enforceable according to its terms. You agree that the Software will not be shipped, transferred or exported into any country or used in any manner prohibited by the United States Export Administration Act or any other export laws, restrictions or regulations. This Agreement shall automatically terminate upon failure by you to comply with its terms. This Agreement may only be modified in writing signed by an authorized officer of Adobe. This is the entire agreement between Adobe and you relating to the Software and the Documentation and it supersedes any prior representations, discussions, undertakings. end user licence agreements, communications or advertising relating to the Software and the Documentation. This shall not prejudice the statutory rights of any party dealing as a consumer.
For your future reference a copy of this End User License agreement will be
accessible after you install the Software. IN NO EVENT WILL ADOBE OR ITS SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER (INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL OR SPECIAL DAMAGES, INCLUDING ANY LOST PROFITS OR LOST SAVINGS) ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE THE SOFTWARE EVEN IF AN ADOBE REPRESENTATIVE HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY CLAIM BY ANY THIRD PARTY. WHERE LEGALLY LIABILITY CANNOT BE EXCLUDED, BUT IT MAY BE LIMITED, ADOBE’S LIABILITY AND THAT OF ITS SUPPLIERS SHALL BE LIMITED TO THE SUM OF TWENTY-FIVE POUNDS (£25) IN TOTAL.
Nothing contained in this Agreement shall prejudice the statutory rights of any party dealing as a consumer. Nothing contained in this Agreement limits Adobe’s liability to you in the event of death or personal injury resulting from Adobe’s negligence.
Adobe is acting on behalf of its suppliers for the purpose of disclaiming, excluding and/or restricting obligations, warranties and liability as provided in this Clause 6, but in no other respects and for no other purpose.
The provisions of this Clause 6 shall survive the termination of this Agreement, howsoever caused, but this shall not imply or create any continued right to use the Software after termination of this Agreement
7. Governing Law for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the substantive laws of Scotland whose courts shall have jurisdiction over all disputes relating to this Agreement.
8. Implementation of the Council Directive on the Legal Protection of Computer Programs in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
You agree not to reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble or otherwise attempt to discover the source code of the Software except as expressly permitted under the Council Directive of 14 May 1991 on the Legal Protection of Computer Programs (“the Directive”). For the avoidance of doubt in the event of any inconsistency between the Directive and any UK legislation the terms of the Directive shall prevail. Please note that you may not decompile the Software unless it is essential to do so in order to achieve operability of the Software with another software program and you have first requested Adobe to provide the information necessary to achieve such operability. Adobe has the right to impose reasonable conditions and to request a reasonable fee before providing such information. Any information supplied by Adobe or obtained by you, as permitted hereunder, may only be used by you for the purpose stated in the Directive and may not be disclosed to any third party or used to create any software which is substantially similar to the expression of the Software. 9. Limited Warranty for Eire.

WHERE LEGAL LIABILITY CANNOT BE EXCLUDED, BUT IT MAY BE LIMITED, ADOBE’S LIABILITY AND THAT OF ITS SUPPLIERS SHALL BE LIMITED TO THE SUM OF TWENTY-FIVE POUNDS (£25) IN TOTAL.
The contractual rights which you enjoy by virtue of Section 12, 13, 14 and 15 of the Sale of Goods Act, 1893 (as amended) are in no way prejudiced by anything contained in this Agreement save (if you are not dealing as a consumer or in the case of an international sale of goods) to the extent permitted by law.
Section 39 of the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act, 1980 is hereby excluded with respect to the supply of the Software. The contractual rights which you enjoy by virtue of the provisions of Section 39 of the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act, 1980 are in no way prejudiced by anything contained in these terms and conditions save to the extent permitted by law.
Adobe is acting on behalf of its suppliers for the purpose of disclaiming, excluding and/or restricting obligations, warranties and liability as provided in this Clause 9, but in no other respects and for no other purpose.
The provisions of this Clause 9 shall survive the termination of this Agreement, howsoever caused, but this shall not imply or create any continued right to use the Software after termination of this Agreement.
10. Governing Law for Eire.
This Agreement is governed by Irish law and you submit to the jurisdiction of the Irish courts in relation to any matter or dispute arising hereunder.
11. Implementation of the European Communities (Legal Protection of Computer Programs) Regulations, 1993 in Eire.
You may make one backup copy of the Software, in accordance with the provisions of the European Communities (Legal Protection of Computer Programs) Regulations, 1993, provided your backup copy is not installed or used on any computer. You agree not to modify, adapt or translate the Software except as permitted under the European Communities (Legal Protection of Computer Programs) Regulations, 1993 in order to render the Software interoperable with other independently created software and any such act must be restricted to the portions of the Software which are necessary to achieve interoperability as stated. You also agree not to reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble or otherwise attempt to discover the source code of the Software except as permitted under the European Communities (Legal Protection of Computer Programs) Regulations, 1993 in order to render the Software interoperable with other independently created software and any such act must be restricted to the portions of the Software which are necessary to achieve interoperability as stated.
If it is necessary for you to decompile the Software in order to obtain information necessary in order to render the Software interoperable with other independently created software in accordance with European Communities (Legal Protection of Computer Programs) Regulations, 1993, as stated above, you may first request Adobe to provide such information. Adobe has the right to impose reasonable conditions such as a reasonable fee for providing such information.
